In the hey-day of the beauty pageant, attractiveness of female contestants was measured in three measurements known as 'vital statistics'. But today, as the mass of online dating websites demonstrates, rather than only judging people by the way they look, we generally want to know a bit more about them. We are attracted to – or even fall in love with – people whose ideas, attitudes and values are compatible with our own.
Buying into a brand is not that different to falling for an individual. When we make a significant purchase our decision is seldom based purely on price and availability. Shopping, whether for a car, a handbag, an accountant, a charity to support or even a PR agency, is an emotional process as well as a practical one. On some level we want to like, trust, respect or feel a connection to the organisation we're buying from.
