Headway supports people after they have experienced a brain injury or stroke, and needs 100 record-breakers to register and take part in a mass Zoom call. The charity is aiming to set a new Guinness World Record for the most hats thrown in the air at the same time, online, and we’ve got our headwear on standby!
At Plain Speaking PR, we have been working with the team at Headway Norfolk and Waveney, to generate lots of pre-event media coverage to drive awareness, engaging with businesses and other organisations to enlist support and persuading people to sign-up. Even Norwich City FC legend, Iwan Roberts, has backed the challenge.
Happening at 4pm on Hats for Headway Day (21 May), a day during Action for Brain Injury Week (17-23 May), this year, the charity is aiming to raise awareness of the ongoing challenge of isolation for those living with an acquired brain injury. While many of us have gone through a period of social isolation during the pandemic, Headway says this is an ongoing, everyday issue for brain injury survivors and carers.
At its centres in Gorleston, King’s Lynn and Norwich, the charity provides a range of occupational therapy-led services, to help people regain skills, confidence, and their independence. It also provides a space for people and their families to meet up, talk and seek respite as they face shared challenges.
Faye Anderson is communications officer at Headway Norfolk and Waveney and says; “Hats for Headway is an annual event where people wear a bright, silly hat to raise awareness of our charity, and the work we do to support people living with acquired brain injuries. But this year we’re going big and attempting to set a world record.
“It’s really easy to join in. Simply pre-register, log on at 4pm on the 21st May, bring your headwear and lots of energy to be a hat-throwing record breaker! It will be a fun and uplifting way to mark the end of Hats for Headway day, while spreading an important message.”
Living through a pandemic has been isolating for everyone, but for people living with an acquired brain injury, life can often feel locked down all the time. The effects of brain injury can include problems with memory, information processing, or speech. Add to this a lack of understanding of this often hidden disability and survivors can often be short of confidence to interact with the outside world. The support and services delivered by Headway aim to change that and the charity hopes this event will raise more awareness about what life is like for those living with an acquired brain injury.
To sign up and take part email recordbreaker@headway-nw.org.uk before 4pm on 20th May. Zoom details will be sent out to you.
Hats off to anyone already taking part!

"Pippa and Hannah have been instrumental in supporting Sue Lambert Trust to gain the recognition the organisation deserves along with building its reputation as the leading charity supporting people who have experienced sexual abuse and violence in Norfolk. Both are attentive, thorough and very professional and I would highly recommend Plain Speaking PR to any organisation working on their brand."

"Plain Speaking are always one of my favourite agencies to work with on stories. They never approach things with a ‘one size fits all’ approach to the media and take time to understand exactly what your audience needs and go over and above to make sure you can serve them. They are open minded with more modern media practices and never drop back into PR cliché – which is refreshing in a market with a lot of old school practitioners who haven’t moved with the times. Their organisation of media events is always exceptional, and the whole team are genuinely a pleasure to do business with."
Neil Perry, Managing Editor, BizClick Media

"I love working with Hannah and Pippa. It's so seamless. They really understand what we need - that readers must come first, and we don't want hundreds of emails promoting things that our readers won't be interested in in a million years. Everything they send us is very professionally put together, perfect for our audiences and a good read. We really enjoy working with them at the EDP."
Liz Nice, Editor, East Anglian Daily Times
"Plain Speaking PR have been brilliant. They really understand what we are all about. As a small social enterprise, we have to do everything ourselves and Pip and Hannah have made a real difference to our press releases. We have been picked up and featured in print and radio media as a direct result. Thank you!"
Sarah McPherson, Founder and Managing Director, Miniature Donkeys for Wellbeing Ltd.
